Balls Out. The clue is in the title. Steel Panther has learned nothing about subtlety or restraint on their second album, and it follows in the low-brow tradition of the debut with more tongue-in-someone-else’s-cheek hair metal anthems about chicks, cars, chicks, parties, chicks and, er, getting your Balls Out.
Steel Panther’s debut Feel The Steel was at least a tiny bit clever in its knowing, self-aware mockery of a style of metal that even the most hardcore of glam fans must surely acknowledge as being inherently absurd. Like Spinal Tap, the Panther succeeded because they laughed with us, rather than at us.
And while we’re still laughing at Balls Out, maybe the guffaws aren’t quite as loud and lusty as when Michael Starr proclaimed death to all but(t) metal and informed us about the fishy scents of Far East hookers.
Funny as it is, the Steel Panther joke is pretty thin and one-dimensional. As much as we can chuckle like Beavis And Butthead about ‘nailing a girl on the driving range’ during “Just Like Tiger Woods,” there’s a nagging feeling the giggles won’t quite stretch to a third album.
That might be the plan: if Steel Panther is truly committed to recreating the eighties hair metal business model, the original line-up will splinter soon anyway, only to reunite for a triumphant Rocklahoma headline tour in 2030. Now that really would be clever.
Whatever the future holds and however much we focus on the dick jokes, an undeniable factor in Panther’s success is that they actually write some of the most amazing eighties metal to have never been released in the eighties. Sure, it’s derivative, but that’s kind of the point and it hardly matters when done so well.
“Tomorrow Night” is all early Crue adrenaline overload; “It Won’t Suck Itself” does better at being Van Halen than Van Halen did after Dave left and “That’s What Girls Are For” could have slipped onto any mid-eighties Def Leppard album largely unnoticed.
The band closes the album with a genuinely heartfelt and emotive ballad. Led by a shimmering, solitary piano and augmented by a sympathetic string arrangement, the track is called “Weenie Ride.” Frank Zappa would be proud, and for now at least, perhaps we’re best not over-analyzing and simply enjoying the roller coaster while it’s still running at full speed.
